(Part 2: Why mRNA produces Anaphylactic reactions)
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS Science) website on December 21, 2020 published a report by Jop de Vrieze entitled “Suspicions grow that nanoparticles in Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine trigger rate allergic reactions” tagged the compound nanoparticle polyethylene glycol that forms the mRNA packaging and main ingredient as the primary suspect in the allergic reactions.
What is Polyethylene glycol?
“… Severe allergy-like reactions in at least eight people who received the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech … may be due to a compound in the packaging of the messenger RNA (mRNA) that forms the vaccine’s main ingredient, … A similar mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna, which was authorized for emergency use… also contains the compound, polyethylene glycol (PEG).
“PEG has never been used before in an approved vaccine, but it is found in many drugs that have occasionally triggered anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening reaction that can cause rashes, a plummeting blood pressure, shortness of breath, and a fast heartbeat. Some allergists and immunologists believe… people previously exposed to PEG may have risk of an anaphylactic reaction to the vaccine.”
The article also mentions the skeptics of the polyetheline glycol as suspect, “’There is a lot of exaggeration when it comes to the risk of PEGs and CARPA,’ says Moein Moghimi, a nanomedicine researcher… who suspects a more conventional mechanism is causing the reactions…. ‘It happens that some people get too much excitement, because they have a relatively high number of local immune cells.’”
Advocates for Pfizer, Modena and other mRNA vaccines admit in their “stock market prospectus filed December 6 2018” the possibility of “reactions to the PEG in the vaccine could be an issue… (but) They agreed that given the low amount of lipid and the intramuscular administration, the risk was negligible.” But not negligible enough, it seems, for hundreds of millions that could be vaccinated.
“Herd immunity” is imperative
The Manila Bulletin reported recently, “Covid vaccinees who refuse to be injected warned”. The rancorous debate rages between vaccine skeptics versus universal vaccination advocates over society’s right to ensure safety for all and the individual’s right to refuse vaccinations that may redound to some harm. I think there is room for individual choice as only 60% to 70% of the “herd” need to be vaccinated.
In early January 2021 survey of the willingness of Filipinos to be vaccinated are not very encouraging, nearly half of Filipinos don’t want the Covid vaccines and only 25% of respondents in Mero-Manila are willing to get Covid-19 vaccines. This is partly due to the sad experience the country has had with the dengue vaccine Dengvaxia suspected in the deaths of up to 600, mostly children.
There is, however, no question that Covid-19 is a vicious virus that threatens the lives of many more hundreds of thousands, if not tens of millions, of Filipinos if not contained – as we have seen in the U.S. and Europe. There is no argument against achieving “heard immunity” through vaccination of that 60% to 70% of the population; hence, it is vital that a safe alternative vaccine be prescribed for the people.
Mankind as every nation facing Covid-19 today is in the same situation as when it faced the scourges of small pox, polio, diphtheria, mumps, measles and other such dreaded diseases of children and the general population in the past. Yet, today, all these diseases are practically unknown, due primarily to vaccines’ effectiveness in halting the spread of such diseases.
It is fortunate that there are Covid-19 vaccines that are far, far gentler and without the suspect element that cause severe side effects to mRNA vaccines present. The method of inactivating viruses to be used as vaccines goes back to the end of the 19th century against typhoid, cholera, the plague and others. The Salk polio vaccine was developed in 1954 using inactivated polio virus using formalin.
Sinovac: 9 million inactivated virus shots
It must be kept in mind that when China entered the vaccine development and production scene the first thing that the Chinese government represented by President Xi Jinping did was to announce that its vaccine when ready would be a “global public good’ and provided without profit to countries in need. China also joined the WHO sponsored COVAX to provide vaccines to poor countries. These clearly threatened the profit motive of US Big Pharma.
China’s Sinovac use inactivated virus for its vaccine as of the 9th of January 2021 had already administered 9-million doses, including seven million doses for high-risk individuals and a million emergency inoculations. Six out of ten thousand experience rashes and skin swelling at the point of inoculation, only one out of a million experienced severe reactions for various reason. Sinovac has been found safe for the elderly.
Subsequently, national and world leaders demonstrated faith in the Sinovac vaccines by being the first among their countrymen to take the Sinovac jab. Among them President Jokowi Widodo of Indonesia, Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan and UAE Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Seventeen countries have ordered hundreds of millions of doses of Sinovac vaccines. Demand for Sinovac is such that it has boosted its production capacity to 1 billion doses per year.
Duterte, Duque vindicated
In the first week of December 2020 the Yellow media blasted away at Secretary Duque in reporting Philippine Ambassador to Washington and Philippine Star columnist Babes Romualdez and Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin’s finger pointing at DOH Sec. Francisco Duque III for allegedly “dropping the ball” on the Pfizer vaccine deal for the country. Duque denied having dropped anything but asserted that he insists on Pfizer’s vaccine undergoing Phase III trial in the Philippines, and Duterte backed Duque.
With the Norway Pfizer associated seniors’ deaths and California’s halting of a batch of 330,000 Moderna vaccines, and the rah-rah boys in government and media Philippine FDA’s advisory to limit the use of the mRNA vaccine of Pfizer, shame and credit must be meted out fairly: Kudo to the much-maligned Duque and President Duterte and shame on Babes Romualdez, Teddy Boy Locsin, Senator Lacson, Angara, Drilon, Hontiveros et al.
The latter, led by Pfizer’s numero uno in-country advocate Dr. Tony Leachon who had worked for Pfizer for nearly 20 years, should take Duterte’s offer to order its vaccine for them, and have themselves inoculated with it.
China and the traditional “inactivated virus” vaccine are the biggest winners in this historic one-year period and of human history, while the biggest loser is the already beaten imperialist propensity of the US attempting its last imperial conquest of the global market.
China’s “global public good” is transforming the developing countries and giving them each of those in joint venture with China an independent means to beat viruses and biowarfare in the future.
