Why Cong. Rufus R. Rodriguez hates China!

By Benjamin Tiu Contreras

Ka Mentong Laurel has an interesting article (Pressing Matters Oct.21, 2025) about our DFA Sec. Ma. Theresa Lazaro.

“She is now attempting to restore balance to our relations with the most important country in regional and global economics – China.”

Accordingly, she announced “…the launching of an E-visa for Chinese nationals starting November as part of continuing efforts to strengthen people-to-people exchange and facilitate trade and tourism.”.

Unfortunately, “,’…anti-China congressman Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro issued a statement saying, “I am strongly opposed to this plan of our ambassador Jaime FlorCruz” claiming “Chinese nationals in our country endangers our national security. Many of them are spies and criminals engaged in kidnapping for ransom, illegal gambling and other illicit activities.”

For someone loved by the Chinese community in Cagayan de Oro, it is indeed very unfortunately that these harsh words and amiss judgment should come from him.

Endangers national security? How? Is he telling us that the presence of US military bases and facilities in the country has no security risk? Would he feel safe when the shooting between PH and China commence considering that Lumbia has become an EDCA site?

Many of them are spies, Rodriguez claims. Rodriguez once head our Bureau of Immigration. During his time, did he notice or feel that the Chinese tourists and visitors could be spies? And what do we have to attract Chinese spies? He must be referring to the PLA uniform found in those POGO buildings. How stupid could they (Chinese nationals) be to leave behind evidences like those uniform if you know what I mean.

Criminals engage in kidnapping for ransom, illegal gambling and other illicit activities, he said. Perhaps, Rodriguez is correct on this. Our government is aware what are the consequences of having POGO in the country. The Chinese government requested our government not to accept POGO which was rejected and expelled from our Asian neighboring countries. Why, because POGO is being used for money laundering and other illegal activities as enumerated by the Congressman.

We have POGO in out city. Our BI here knew it. And a few of us (PRRD group) knew it, too. And we all knew why they were able to operate without being disturbed by any of our concern authorities. Dili na lang ta magpaka buang-buang. Did BI ever investigate the dead Chinese national who was found hanging in a tree. BI claimed they knew nothing about it. Well, pretty obvious, right?

Cong. Rufus would like to stop it. I suggest he go farther and cut ties with China all together. Perhaps, it would make him a hero, I supposed.

He is a good friend to me. I just feel sad that it has to be him to say those things. Just a word of caution. It’s good to know your enemies. But it’s far better to know your friends.

Hinaut lang unta nga dili taka mapadad-an ug samin ugma damlag.

DFA Sec. Ma. Theresa Lazaro is a brave woman to do that. Kudos!
